This fan of approximately 70 naturally molted feathers from pet Macaws is a mix of blue, yellow, green and red. Central to this fan is a native hand beaded four color patch mounted on a seasonally shed deer horn. Signed by the artist this is truly one-of-a-kind.

The fans made from macaws feathers are ancient ceremonial objects. Many fans have been found in ruins throughout the American Southwest and suggest early contact and trade with Mexico. In the Archeological Museum at Mexico City there is an extraordinary Macaw feather fan that was found at Teotihuacan.

Today, feather fans are still widely used in Native American and spiritual ceremonies as part of a purity ritual called smudging. Fans stir up smoke from burning sage, which is believed to dispel negative energy.
